The East Broadway streetscape work is in progress! After completion of work in 2014, East Somerville residents will enjoy wider sidewalks and gathering areas in front of neighborhood institutions, bicycle lanes, and increased landscaping. However, there’s still more work to be done which is shown in our concepts below.
Buildings contribute to a streetscape in a multitude of ways. Using blank walls in canvases can create interest in the streetfront. Installations can be temporary or permanent but must be maintained. The scale can range from tiny to huge from security shutters or insets to entire facades.
After the streetscape improvements, the majority of Broadway will have 20′ sidewalks. Streetseats are movable table and chairs, frequently maintained by local businesses, that do not require patronage for use. Streetseats signal to neighborhood residents and visitors that it’s okay to sit and enjoy the area.
After the streetscape improvements, the majority of Broadway will have 20′ sidewalks. Restaurants can take advantage by providing cafe tables for patrons. These summer month installations will create a destination for dining al fresco in Somerville.
